    How Firewall Licensing Works

    Devices Include:

    • Desktop computers
    • Servers
    • Laptops
    • Handheld devices
    • and any other devices that will access the Internet

    Optional Add-On Security Services

A powerful feature of the SonicWALL TZ series is that you can add special security services to enhance your network security.  Most subscription are either 1,2 or 3 years long and do need to be renewed to continue receiving the security service.  These services include:

    • Gateway Antivirus - The firewall will block viruses at the perimeter of the network before it reachs any users or servers on the network.
    • Spyware Protection - Will detect, block and alert you in the event a user tries to download an application with a spyware bug.  In addition, it can also detect if a user has spyware install on their computer when it tries to broadcast information to the Internet.
    • Intrusion Prevention - Used to protect your servers that can be accessed from users on the Internet.  This would include email, weB and FTP servers.
    • Content Filtering - Gives you control over the type of websites your users can view on the Internet.
    • Desktop & Server Virus Protection - Protects your network servers and desktops from viruses being installed on the local network.
    • Technical Support Services - Provides technical support, firmware upgrades and hardware warranty services.

    Upgrades for the TZ 180

To help protect your intial investment in the firewall SonicWALL has made special upgrades available.  The upgrades are a one-time purchase and do not need to be renewed.  These upgrades include:

    • Node Upgrade - Allows you to upgrade the licensed node count on the firewall to support more users as your network grows.

  • SonicWALL CDP Buyer's Guide

SonicWALL’s CDP devices are designed to sit on your network and continuously backup files and data as it is changed. The devices were developed to replace the old, problem-prone tape backup systems that have plagued businesses for years. Tape backups are unreliable because in many cases the backup files become corrupt over time due to wear and tear on the tape. Using SonicWALL’s disk based CDP devices; this is no longer a problem. If data is ever accidentally deleted or corrupted, the user can quickly restore the file directly from the device without the network admin having to take time out of their day to recover the data. Easy to use and reliable, once in place you can basically forget it’s there until you need it.

When choosing the proper device you want to look at the no. of users that will need to be supported as well as servers. You will also want to look at the amount of data that needs to be stored. SonicWALL has 4 device in the CDP series. There are no hard numbers on supported users, only recommendations. Below is a list of the 4 models:

    CDP 1440iRecommended for 15 or fewer users/ 3 servers

  • SonicWALL SSL-VPN Buyer's Guide

SonicWALL’s SSL-VPN devices are standalone boxes that sit on your network and manage remote access to your systems. Unlike conventional IPSEC VPNs, SSL-VPNs require no client software on the remote user’s computer. Secure, high encryption access is achieved using only a standard web browser. After authentication, the SSL-VPN device automatically provides the “client” to the remote browser during the session and removes all traces of it when the session is ended. This means that secure access to the network can be assured even over a public machine whether from a public library workstation or a mobile notebook computer using a public hotspot.

The key to sizing which device is appropriate for your situation is primarily defined by the size of your network and the number of concurrent remote users needed. While these devices have no actual licensing restrictions, they do have recommended maximums for performance considerations as reflected in the list below:

SSL-VPN 200 Recommended for organizations with 50 or fewer employees

    Concurrent User License: Unrestricted

    Recommended Maximum Concurrent Users: 10

    --------------------------

SSL-VPN 2000 Recommended for organizations with 500 or fewer employees

    Concurrent User License: Unrestricted

    Recommended Maximum Concurrent Users: 50

    --------------------------

SSL-VPN 4000 Recommended for organizations with 500 or more employees

    Concurrent User License: Unrestricted

    Recommended Maximum Concurrent Users: 200

    --------------------------

  • SonicWALL Firewall Buyer's Guide

    Introduction

We understand how important it is that you purchase the right SonicWALL firewall solution for your network. This guide is designed for the person interested in buying a SonicWALL TZ 170 firewall for their company or home network.   The guide will walk you through selecting the right hardware, support contract, and adding on additional security services for enhanced network protection.

Step #1: Before you get started

Before purchasing a SonicWALL firewall you need to determine whether or not it will work with your network.  Here are the requirements that MUST be met before selecting a firewall:

    a) Internet Connection - Your internet connection must be a broadband connection.  A broadband connection can be either a DSL, cable, T-1, fractional T-1 or in some cases an ISDN connection. b) Network Protocol - Your local network must be utilizing the TCP/IP protocol.  If you are not sure whether or not you are running TCP/IP check the network settings on your desktop or contact your network administrator for assistance. c) Check with your ISP - You will want to check with your ISP and let them know that you are going to be deploying a firewall.  We have run into a few instances where the ISP prohibited our client from running a firewall.  Sounds crazy, right?  It happens.

Step #2: Choosing the Right Firewall

SonicWALL TZ 170 firewalls are based on nodes.  A node is considered as any device on the network that will access the internet through the firewall.  Here are a couple of examples: a) Your network has 9 computers and 1 file server and all of the computers and the server need to access the internet. In this case you will need a firewall that supports at least 10 nodes.  However, you may want to buy the 25 node version in case your network grows. b) Your network has a total of 30 desktop computers and 1 server but only 15 computers and the server need to have access.  In this case you will need a firewall that supports at least 16 nodes or the SonicWALL TZ 170 25 node firewall. In the case of example (b), you will need to create special rules in the firewall to block access for those IP addresses that are not allowed to access the internet.  If you do not do this then all of the devices on the network will be assigned a license and you would have to move up to a bigger firewall. The different SonicWALL TZ 170 firewall models are:
SonicWALL TZ170 10 User - Supports up to 10 nodes on the network.
SonicWALL TZ170 25 User - Supports up to 25 nodes on the network.
SonicWALL TZ170 Unrestricted - Supports over 25 (unrestricted) nodes on the network. Tip: All TZ 170 firewalls can have the number of supported nodes upgraded to the next level.  This ensures that your firewall investment will not go to waste as your company grows.

Step #3: Selecting the Right Support Option

All SonicWALL TZ 170 firewalls come standard with a (12) month warranty and 90 days of 8x5 (8 hours a day, 5 days a week) technical support.  During the coverage of your support you will receive firmware upgrades, new features and bug fixes that are released. You have two choices for adding additional support to the firewall:

8x5 support - Provides SonicWALL technical support 8 hours a day 5 days a week; firmware updates and upgrades; "return to factory" for replacement of defective hardware.

24x7 support - Provides SonicWALL technical support 24 hours a day 7 days a week; firmware updates and upgrades; advanced replacement of defective hardware. Tip: In order to maintain your firewall investment we strongly advise you to purchase the additional (12) months of 8x5 support for the firewall.  Not only will you continue to receive support but you will also receive the firmware and patches that are released for the firewall.  In addition the warranty of the firewall is also extended and is set to expire whenever your support contract expires.

    Step #4: Add-On Security Features

The entire series of SonicWALL firewalls offer a multitude of "bolt-on" security features.  These features allow you to quickly and cost effectively protect your network from additional Internet threats.  This includes content filtering, spyware protection, virus protection and more.  Listed below are some of these security services you should consider purchasing with your firewall to protect your network from additional attacks.
