How to Download, Install and Use The SonicWALL NetExtender Client

In this video you are going to learn how to download, install and configure the SonicWALL NetExtender SSL VPN client.
A SSL VPN client like NetExtender has a couple of similarities with traditional IPsec-based VPN clients:

  • Provides network level access.
  • Uses a virtual adapter.
  • Supports split-tunneling and full tunnel mode.
  • Includes the same popular options, e.g. map network drives, use connection profiles, etc.

However, using the NetExtender offers a few benefits:

  • Improved connectivity.
  • Simplified distribution; users can download it from the SSL VPN portal.
  • Broad OS support(including mobile devices).

What is the SonicWALL NetExtender

The SonicWALL NetExtender is a SSL VPN client that provides network level access to applications, services or any other resources on the corporate network.

The end user experience is pretty much identical to that offered by traditional IPsec-based VPN clients.

How to manually install the SonicWALL NetExtender

In order to download the SonicWALL NetExtender, users will simply log into the SSL VPN portal from where they have an option to download the appropriate NetExtender version, the standard version or the mobile version.

The installation, for example on a Windows machine, is an easy process since an installation wizard is provided.

Using the SonicWALL NetExtender

Once NetExtender was installed, connecting to a SSL VPN server requires the user to:

  • Enter the address of the SSL VPN server.
  • Enter your user name and password; for a basic connection, you don’t need to specify a pre-shared key like with an IPsec-based VPN client.

SonicWALL NetExtender options

From NetExtender’s UI you can configure many options; to name a few:

  • Connect at computer start.
  • Start at user login.
  • Automatically reconnect if the connection is terminated due to various reasons like connectivity issues.
  • When exiting the UI, automatically uninstall the NetExtender VPN client.
  • Use connection scripts; e.g. run a script to map network drives.
  • Instruct NetExtender to use a proxy server.
