Episode 8: Inside a Ransomware Cell
Join us as we get a look behind the curtain of the Russian ransomware cell Hildacrypt courtesy of our latest Ping: A Firewalls.com Podcast guest, SonicWall’s Brook Chelmo. Brook made contact with members of the cell in October, and took the opportunity to learn about what makes them tick. He shares some of what he’s learned with Kevin and Andrew, including thoughts on why members chose to form a ransomware cell, their motivations, what targets are off limits, and even things you can do to avoid becoming a ransomware victim. We also discuss reactions to his recent Mindhunter webinar on the subject, and his hopes for the future of this and other ransomware cells.
Our Network Engineer Kevin Norris (not related to our co-host) tells us about sandboxing – both physical and cloud-based – and how it can help you combat ransomware. Check out all of the expert security services our certified engineers offer.
And in our Headlines segment, we learn about long-term, life and death implications of ransomware attacks on hospitals; go over why churches and charitable organizations need to remember cybersecurity this holiday season, and discuss the growing prominence of mobile VPN apps.
