How does Sophos MDR Complete actually work?

A Sophos security operations team monitors your environment 24/7. They investigate alerts, hunt for threats that slip past automated tools, and when they confirm a real attack they respond and shut it down for you. With Complete, that includes full incident response and cleanup, not just a heads up. You decide how much they do on your behalf using three response modes in Sophos Central: Notify, Collaborate, or Authorize.

Do I need a Sophos firewall to use MDR Complete?

No. MDR Complete does not require a Sophos firewall. It runs on Sophos endpoint protection or the lightweight XDR Sensor, and it pulls in telemetry from more than 350 third party tools across network, cloud, identity, and email. If you already own a firewall from another vendor, the service still works. You do need a supported Sophos agent on the endpoints you want the team to protect.

What is the difference between MDR Essentials and MDR Complete?

Both tiers give you the same 24/7 monitoring, threat hunting, and active containment. The difference is who finishes the response. With Essentials, Sophos contains the threat and guides your team through cleanup, and deeper incident response is a separate paid engagement. With Complete, the Sophos team runs the full response end to end with no hourly caps, a dedicated response lead, a 60 minute SLA on high severity cases, and a breach protection warranty of up to $1 million. If you do not have a security team of your own to handle cleanup, Complete is usually the right call.

How is Sophos MDR Complete priced?

MDR Complete is licensed per user and sold through Sophos partners, so pricing is quote based rather than a fixed list price. Multi year terms and higher user counts bring the per user cost down. Can Sophos MDR Complete help with HIPAA or SOC 2 requirements?

It can support your compliance program. MDR Complete gives you 24/7 monitoring, documented incident response, and a quarterly security posture report, which are the kinds of controls and evidence auditors look for under frameworks like HIPAA and SOC 2.
